SERVING DISH WITH FINGER JOINTS

I made this so that I could play with my finger joint jig.

I started by making the round section of staves.

Next I added some walnut for a lip on top.

I used a pattern bit on the router table, to finish the lip.

Now I got to have some fun with the finger joint jig. I made the fingers a little proud of the sides. Then sanded it all down on the belt sander.

For the base, I joined strips of more walnut and maple. Then finish sanded both sides on the drum sander.

Time to join the base and the sides.

I used hide glue for gluing the base to the sides, because glue ooze out couldn't be avoided. The hide glue can be wiped off with a wet paper towel, while it's fresh, and doesn't show when adding a finish to the project.

This serving tray was a big hit for my nephew and his family.
