I like to challenge myself and make unique looking projects. This one looked interesting to me.

I like taking pictures of the rough stock before starting a project. I enjoy seeing the stark difference between the beginning and the end.

I chose some dark walnut and some light hard maple as a contrast. It starts out like any other segment bowl. Gluing the segmented rings up.

Getting the dish shaped the way that looks good.

Then sand it down to the finish sanding.

After I was done with the sanding, I dug out the underneath side of the rim as much as I dared, without blowing it out.

To add a little pizazz to this, I wanted to make some cutouts in the rim. I drew some random shapes. Then I lined the top of the rim with painter’s tape, so as not to scratch the top side.
The only way to make these cuts, was with a 360° cutting blade. After cutting all the shapes out, I used a small rotary tool to smooth out the shapes and to round over the top edges.
I chose an antique oil finish for this. The downside to using the oil finish on this, was that it darkened the maple wood. A different type of finish might have been better suited for this combination of woods. But it still looks nice.
