I saw a bowl similar in shape to this, and it really intrigued me. So I came up with a plan to make one.

I wanted to make this bowl as large as I could for the size of my lathe. I glued up some 3/4" pine, as well as some 1 1/2" thick redwood, to get boards 14" x 14".

This is a picture of the boards before I cut and glued them up.

I cut the top and bottom boards at an angle in the bandsaw.

Then I glued up the layers so that the stack of boards were at an angle.

Here you can see the angle in the finished stack, as I am cutting the stack into a circle.

Sorry, I didn't get any good pictures of the stack, or of the turning process on the lathe.

Here is how I got the angled shape on both the outside and the inside of the bowl.

I started out shaping it with a "Kutzall" Original, coarse shaping disc.

Thenk I went to some flapper discs.

Finally I used some small sanding discs. After that, plenty of hand sanding. Since this was all soft wood, it went pretty fast.

Having the layers of wood at an angle, and adding the different depths, the design came out looking quite nice.

I didn't want to darken the white pine any, so I used a "Soap Finish" on the bowl. The contrast between the pine and redwood is beautiful.
