There's not a lot to show on this table. I'm not one to make a plain table top. I had to make it unique.

I like to do segment bowl turning. I used the segment cutting method to make this design. I made the design in a circular shape. Then I cut the two sides straight. Next step was to trace the shape onto a masonite board. I clamped this form onto the walnut table top. First I roughly cut out the shape of the pattern, using a jig saw. I cut 1/2" away from the pattern. Using a pattern bit on my router, I routered out the finished shape. I only routered the depth to the thickness of the segmented pattern. This left a 1/2" lip for the oak segment to lay on. I glued the segment shape onto the lip.

I had a cup to attach to the bottom of the segment ring. This is for a small plant vase.

I chose a Danish oil finish for this because of how simple it is to apply. With all the segment pieces I couldn't use a finish that would require sanding between coats. The Danish oil just requires two coats of oil applied liberally. I used a small rag to line the inside of the segments with the oil.

After applying the oil, you need to wipe off any excess oil. This was easy with a blue shop paper towel.

I like how you can look down through the segments on the table top.

I used a small log from an apricot tree, for the cactus vase. I used a succulent for this since I coated the log with epoxy to make it completely water tight. Succulents just require the soil to be a little moist. I didn't want to worry about someone over watering a flower in this table top.

The friends I gave this to were thrilled to death.
