My neighbor, years ago, cut down some walnut trees in his yard and milled them down into boards. He kept some of the outer perimeter boards with intensions of making something with them someday. Unfortunately he died before doing anything with them. So in memory of him, I made a bunch of rustic shelves for all his family members with the walnut.
The wood had been laying out for many years, so it had all turned gray from weathering. I was able to bring back most of the natural color by power washing it. Then a flap sander helped clean up the log sides some more. With a handheld planer and sander I smoothed down the flat sides.
With a bandsaw I shaped the shelf supports to match the curvater of the log shape on the bottom of some of the shelves.
Spraying a few coats of lacquer made these unique shaped shelves look nice.
