I made this sleigh 18 years ago after my first grandson was born. I’ve pushed all my grandkids in it every chance I could. Originally I made the handle with a pair of oak stairway spindles. After years of stress the wood finally cracked. So I had to make some heavier duty oak handles to replace the original ones.

Originally I had finished the oak with an oil based spar varnish. The oil based varnish brings out a nice rich tone to the wood. When I finished the new handles, I used some water based spar urethane, that I already had. The water based urethane doesn’t add any color to the wood, so it ended up with a different look.

It wasn’t bad enough that I wanted to redo the finish, so I left it.
