I made this sign for some friends of mine that live in an apartment complex. They wanted to display it at their door in the hallway.

I wrote out their name first on a paper, and then retraced it onto the board using carbon paper. Then with a 45° veining bit, I routered it into the wood.

I thought it would look good to add a border on top of the sign. Since it was all rough cedar, I was concerned about glue oozing out when I glued the border on. To alleviate this problem, I used the same veining bit to make a small groove along the border pieces. This lets any glue that starts to creep out to the edge of the border, to fill up in the groove, before exiting out the side.

Usually I would use a keyhole router bit to make a slot for hanging. That usually requires a screw or a solid nail to hang on. Since I knew that my friends would want to just use a small nail for hanging, I opted to use a standard picture hanger. So that the sign could hang flush against the wall, I used a ¾” router bit to make a recess for the hanger clip.
